Brazilian integrated steelmaker Gerdau has reportedly reduced wages and shifts for 40 workers at its Charqueadas mill, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, a media report from Jornal do Comercio said. Additionally, Gerdau also provisionally dismissed 200 workers, the media report said.
Recent changes in Brazilian labor laws allowed companies to provisionally suspend work contracts. Earlier in March, Gerdau halted operations at certain product lines at its Charqueadas mill for 15 days, as reported by SteelOrbis.
At the time, the company told SteelOrbis in an emailed response it would consider paid vacations for workers to prevent layoffs.
