US steel import permits up 11.2 percent in June

Based on the US Department of Commerce’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, steel import permit applications for the month of June 2020 totaled 1,817,349 mt. This was an 11.2 percent increase from the 1,634,177 mt in final census data totals recorded in May but a 1.7 percent decrease from the 1,849,718 mt in census data totals recorded in June 2019.

In June, steel products with the largest total steel import permits included blooms, billets and slab at a combined 493,084 mt; HDG, at 208,934 mt; OCTG, at 109,640 mt; HRC, at 106,371 mt; line pipe, at 82,776 mt; and CRC, at 80,673 mt.

The largest sources of steel import permit applications in June were Brazil (508,745 mt), Canada (336,307 mt), Mexico (231,637 mt), Korea (191,425 mt), and Taiwan (65,516 mt).
