US steel import permits up 68.9 percent in April

Based on the US Department of Commerce’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, steel import permit applications for the month of April 2020 totaled 2,684,071 mt. This was a 68.9 percent increase from the 1,589,069 mt in final census data totals recorded in March but an 11.3 percent decrease from the 3,025,105 mt in census data totals recorded in April 2019.

In April, steel products with the largest total steel import permits included blooms, billets and slab at a combined 1,418,942 mt; HDG, at 117,943 mt; HRC, at 107,860 mt; CRC, at 99,825 mt; rebar, at 87,339 mt; and OCTG, at 84,805 mt.

The largest sources of steel import permit applications in April were Brazil (1,259,813 mt), Canada (305,741 mt), Mexico (291,894 mt), Korea (150,042 mt), and Russia (72,107 mt).
